Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria was created as a unit of the University in 1986 and the Federal Government selection of Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU), Zaria as a Centre of Excellence in nuclear science and technology in 1976, was the catalyst that gave impetus to its establishment. The nuclear science programme in ABU commenced with the inauguration of the Nuclear Science Programme Steering Committee (NSPSC) in 1977 and that initiated a lot of works including awareness programme on nuclear science, recruitment, training and retraining of personnel, development of physical infrastructures, acquisition of equipment and development of policy guidelines that laid a solid foundation for CERT. With over three decades of nuclear programme in ABU and the over two decades its establishment, CERT has become the foremost institution of nuclear science and technology and at the forefront in the promotion of peaceful application of nuclear science in Nigeria. The research and training activities of CERT are organized around five units called sections, namely Nuclear Science and Technology (NSTS), Health Physics and Radiation Biophysics (HPRBS), Material Science and Development (MSDS), Engineering and Instrumentation Design (EIDS) and Reactor Engineering Section (RES) The objectives, research and training activities and the services rendered by each of the Sections are provided and were drawn in line with the objectives and functions of CERT.
